“Faust et le Maharal de Prague. Le mythe et le réel” (Faust and the Maharal of Prague: The Myth and the Reality) is a profound cross-cultural philosophical and literary monograph written in French by the eminent French-Jewish thinker and scholar André Neher (1914–1988). Published in 1987 by the Presses Universitaires de France (PUF) as part of their “Questions” collection, the 208-page volume explores the striking parallels, deep contrasts, and historical intersections between two of Europe’s greatest cultural legends: Doctor Faust and Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel (the Maharal of Prague).

Neher, who was a professor at the University of Strasbourg and later Tel Aviv University, spent much of his academic life studying the Maharal’s dialectical theology. In this book, he shifts into comparative literature and intellectual history to analyze 16th-century Central Europe—a turbulent era of scientific revolution, mysticism, and existential anxiety.
