Mendy and the Golem Kosher Comic Book. Leibel Estrin No. 15, 5774
“I majored in Popular Culture. My mentor Dr. Ray Browne founded the Center for the Study of Popular Culture. It was the first attempt to take a serious look at comic books, movies and fan magazines. When I graduated, I had no idea how I was going to make a living. But Divine Providence made my choice easy. Jim Johnston, the head of Cleveland’s largest Ad Agency had graduated in American history and was intrigued by my background. So he hired me as a copywriter.
Several years later, some friends asked me if I could write a comic book for Jewish kids, I certainly knew enough about comic books, but I didn’t know a lot about Judaism. So we made a deal. I could write whatever I wanted and they would have three rabbits, I mean rabbis, review it. That was the start of Mendy and the Golem. One story led to another and I’m still writing.
My books included 19 issues of Mendy and the Golem, Rabbi Riddle, The Chanukah Adventures of Danny the Dreamer, The Man who Rode with Eliyahu HaNovi, Danny Three Times, How the Rainbow got its Stripes (Len Estrin),and Judaism from Above the Clouds.”
